Have you ever thought that there just isn’t enough time in the day to get everything done? When our lives get crazy busy the last thing we want to focus on is cleaning our carpets. A busy day can turn into a busy week and a month later you may be looking at your carpets in despair. How on earth did your carpets become so dirty and stained? It can feel like the dirt and those stains are piling up faster than you can vacuum and clean them.

A Carpet Cleaning Checklist for a Healthy Home

Here are a few tips you can follow to keep your carpet clean and your tasks on schedule.

Clean Regularly

Regular professional carpet cleaning maintenance can go a long way in helping you keep your carpets feeling fresh and looking clean. When we say regular professional maintenance, we mean 3-4 times a year. Regular maintenance on your part can help extend that like-new feeling and look even longer. Even when your day is packed full of to-dos it is always a good idea to carve out some time for carpet cleaning. Carpets can be an expensive investment and you want them to last as long as possible.

Carpet Stains: Respond Quickly & Blot

The longer a spill is allowed to set the higher the chance that spill will turn into a stain. Stains can be extremely difficult to remove on your own. When you do clean up the mess make sure you use a blotting motion with a damp cloth. Do not rub the spill. Some of us are tempted to scrub the spill with a circular motion, however, in doing so we are causing the spill to spread and seep deeper into the carpet fibers. Blotting, or lightly dabbing at the spill can prevent permanent staining and spreading. Avoid using and chemical solution that may damage your carpets. At K-tech Kleening in Wausau, we recommend using a solution as follows. ¼ white vinegar, 1 tablespoon of dish soap, and water. Spray the area liberally and let it soak for about 5 minutes and begin to blot the spill until your rag comes away clean.  If the area does stain, contact your local carpet cleaning company to remove the stain. The professionals will know what type of solution will work best on the type and color of carpets you have.

Vacuuming: It’s Not A Race

Vacuuming is one of the obvious solutions in keeping your carpets clean. You would be surprised at how many homeowners don’t vacuum properly. First, you will want to make sure that you start with a clean filter or bag when you vacuum. A dirty filter or back can really hamper your vacuums suction capabilities. Next, it is important to take your time while vacuuming. The faster you move the vacuum over a carpeted area, the less time the suction of the vacuum has to work on pulling up any dirt, dander, or other debris. Take your time going over each section of carpet to capture as much as possible. Then you will want to make sure your vacuum is set at the correct height for your carpet. If your vacuum is too high, it can’t reach down to pick up all the dirt. IF your vacuum is too low, the vacuums brush or belt may damage your carpet. Lastly, if you have a pet-friendly home, check your vacuum’s brush to make sure hair hasn’t wrapped around the brush, preventing it from doing its job.
