With the crazy amount of snow we have gotten here in Wisconsin this spring, there is a lot of water still in frozen form. Once the weather finally decides to warm up there is going to be a good chance of flooding in low lying areas. No one wants to worry about their home getting water damage but sometimes there are a few things you can do to help mitigate the damage if something does happen.
There are really two main entry points where water can get into your home, the roof and the foundation. One of the first things you can do to prevent water damage is to fix any cracks or leaks that you see in the foundation or roof of your home. You can use things such as caulk, cement, or mortar to fix foundation cracks that you may find.
With our rain gutters and on our houses it is very easy for them to be clogged up with debris such as leaves and sticks from last fall. When all of the snow decides to melt and our gutters are clogged it leads to the potential for our roof to spring a leak with the exposure to all that water. Try to make sure that your gutters are clear of debris so that your roof doesn’t get water damage. Your roof is extremely important to your home and structural damage from water can lead to possibly more expensive problems later.
If your home happens to get flooded or some other type of water damage you will want to save any valuable and prevent damage to appliances, especially in basements where water can arrive first. Try to relocate any electronics or furniture and shut off any appliances that could be affected. And if it is possible to try to elevate your appliances above the water level.
Lastly if in the unfortunate event that your home does get water damage the best thing you can do is call a professional for restoration. Getting your home dried quickly and efficiently will help to save you money in the long run. Long exposure to water can lead to structural damage in your home as well as the possibility for mold growth. Mother Nature is already trying to ruin your spring, don’t let her trash your house too!
