Understanding the Function of Dehumidifiers

How Dehumidifiers Work

The air then encounters cooling coils inside the unit that are colder than the dew point temperature of the ambient air. As a result, moisture in the air condenses into water droplets on the coils.

These water droplets collect in a drip pan or tank at the bottom of the dehumidifier. Some units need regular emptying of the tank, while others have a hose for continuous drainage, such as into a sump pump basin. More advanced models may even feature a pump for draining into a floor drain or sink.

As the air passes through the cooling coils, heat is lost during the condensation process, and the now dry and cooler air is released back into the room. This cycle continues to reduce humidity levels. Most units have a humidity level monitor, and some can be set to a specific humidity control setting.

There are different types of dehumidifiers, with refrigerant types being the most common. These units are effective at reducing humidity levels and preventing mold growth.
